The story of Järvenpää Art Museum began in 1990, when the City received a substantial art collection as a donation from Kaarina Aho, the granddaughter of Venny Soldan-Brofeldt and Juhani Aho. The Soldan-Brofeldt Gallery opened in 1992 in an exhibition space built on the lower floor of the library.
A decision to expand and grow the gallery was made in 1997, when Eero Järnefelt’s granddaughter Elisa Paloheimo donated a comprehensive collection of Järnefelt’s 20th century works to the City. With the addition of professional museum staff, the name Järvenpää Art Museum was introduced in 2002. The collection has since continued to grow with new donations and deposits. The museum’s activities and complementary programme have also continued to grow, and the museum’s exhibition and storage facilities have been expanded to better meet the increased needs.
In addition to the Art Museum, the Museum Services of the City of Järvenpää manages three unique museum sites in the Lake Tuusula area: Ahola, Suviranta and Villa Kokkonen. You can find out more about all our sites by clicking on the link below.

Eero Järnefelt and Venny Soldan-Brofeldt
Järvenpää Art Museum’s main collection consists of the works of two nationally important artists, Venny Soldan-Brofeldt (1863–1945) and Eero Järnefelt (1863–1937). They worked as neighbours and members of the Lake Tuusula artist community at the turn of the 20th century.
During their artistic careers, Fennomania and the Finnish national identity took their visual shape in the wake of international art movements. The museum has the largest collection of works by both of these artists in Finland. The subjects of the works in the collection include vibrantly coloured landscapes, natural lyricism, depictions of everyday family life and skilful portraits. The works were created very close by – almost next door to the museum.
